8 Things Every Cigar Smoker Should Know

Published

on

Things-Every-Cigar-Smoker-Should-Know

Something that you will probably start to notice once you take up cigar smoking is that there is an awful lot of elitism that goes on within the community. There are no rules about who can or can’t smoke cigars, but they are typically associated with the higher classes.

They’re expensive, they’re a bit of a niche interest and they do have a certain amount of cultural significance. And this of course leads to a sense of superiority being bred amongst those who smoke.

That’s never a good thing, and one of the many consequences of it is misinformation. People talking about stuff that they don’t really understand or just coming out with random, uninformed statements about cigars to make themselves sound smart.

It’s difficult to be truly in the know about cigars when you have so many people just throwing around their opinions and their unsubstantiated ideas as facts. If you want to be a cigar smoker, here’s 8 things you should know to get ahead of all that stuff:

1.  Basic Cigar Anatomy

The makeup of a cigar is actually pretty straightforward, despite what some people might try to tell you. There are basically just three main components involved that you should familiarize yourself with.

You’ve got the wrapper which is the outer leaf, the only part you see on an uncut cigar. Like all three of these parts, the wrapper is made of tobacco. The binder is the second layer on the inside and is usually made from the same leaf, but doesn’t have to be as smooth or pristine because no one sees it.

And then you’ve got the most important part, which is the filler. The thick, interior tube of tobacco, which is usually made up of a variety of different kinds of tobacco. This is where most of the flavour comes from and where cigar makers have the greatest opportunity to experiment.

2.  The Importance of Storage

Cigars are not like cigarettes in the sense that you can just stick them in a box and keep them in your jacket pocket for months, or even years, before smoking them. Without proper storage, their flavour will deteriorate very quickly and they could even develop mold.

You need to invest in a humidor to store your cigars. This is a specifically designed cedar-wood container which has oils and aromas infused within to ensure that the temperature and the moisture levels are controlled.

A good humidor will serve its purpose for years to come, and you can even get a custom humidor if you want to display it and your cigars in your home.

3.  How to Cut Them

Cutting a cigar is a part of the process that some people don’t take that seriously. It’s something you have to do to be able to smoke it and while the easy route might be to just use a knife or a scissors, you are doing your cigar a disservice if you do that.

You want an even cut to ensure that you get as much value out of the cigar as possible, and that means getting yourself an actual cigar cutter. There’s guillotine cutters, punch cutters, V-cutters and a few other types for you to choose from.

4.  And How to Light Them

Again, you could just straight up light the cigar with a normal match, but to ignite the entire foot, while also making sure it doesn’t come into direct contact with the flame is tricky without either a butane lighter or a cigar-specific wooden match.

5.  Cigar Aging

Cigars are a little bit like wine in the sense that aging is an important part of the manufacturing process. The tobacco leaves themselves are aged before the cigar is put together. This is done by packing them into tight parcels to allow carotenoids to break down.

After you buy them, you can also age them yourself for a while if you like. You will still get a good flavour off freshly-bought cigars, but letting them sit for a long time. This allows the last of the acidity to fade away and for the cigar to reach its peak flavour.

They have to be aged in a humidor though, and unlike wine, you can’t really leave them for hundreds of years or their flavour will start to wane.

6.  How to Smoke Properly

You’d be surprised at how many people don’t realize this about cigars, especially those who are new to them, but the way in which you smoke them is not like smoking cigarettes at all. You are not supposed to inhale.

If you’ve never smoked before, make sure you are aware of this before you start, because if you inhale you’re going to have a bad time. Just let the flavour sit in your mouth so that you can relish in it.

A good cigar should conceivably last for like 30-40 minutes. If you take too many puffs you can cause the cigar to overheat and become bitter, so instead just be nice and slow with it.

7.  Origins

It’s always worth knowing a little bit of history about cigars, especially if you want to be able to have conversations with other smokers. The general belief is that cigars were invented by the Ancient Mayans sometime before the 10th Century.

The Mayans were an incredible advanced civilization in Mesoamerica who had a lot of innovations, this one included. It is assumed that the practice spread across the Americas, and when Columbus invaded the new world in the 15th Century he picked it up from the locals.

From there it was brought back to Europe and the global popularity of cigars began to explode.

8.  What Are the Health Risks

Cigars do come with health risks, and depending on how often you smoke them, they’re not significantly less dangerous than cigarettes. You are not inhaling it into your lungs, but you are still exposing yourself to tobacco and so the risk of oral or throat cancer is still there.

No tobacco product is truly safe, and it can all lead to serious health problems like cancer or heart disease. And contrary to popular belief, you can get addicted to cigars, people just tend not to because they don’t smoke them as often as cigarettes.

It’s important to be aware of this so that if you do choose to smoke cigars, you do so in moderation.

As well as all of this stuff, I also think it’s important to make sure that you don’t become a part of the elitism problem. Keep yourself informed on important facts, but avoid allowing yourself to develop any sense of superiority or to feel condescending towards other cigar smokers.

Should You Give CBD to Your Puppy?

Published

on

should-you-give-cbd-to-your-puppy

Do you have a dog that is a little violent, anxious, or misbehaving?

If that’s the case, you’re undoubtedly wondering if they, like older dogs, can benefit from CBD.

They certainly can; however, a few things to bear in mind before giving CBD to your puppy.

What Exactly Is CBD?

Dried cannabis flowers naturally contain more CBD than other Cannabis sativa plant kinds.

Cannabidiol is a chemical component discovered in the cannabis plant that belongs to the cannabinoid family. The endocannabinoid system in the human body interacts with cannabinoids to assist the body maintain homeostasis.

CBD does not cause a “high” like its relative delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, although it is psychoactive. Epidiolex, an oral CBD solution, was licensed by the US Food & Drug Administration in 2018 to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome & Dravet, two rare and severe pediatric epilepsy disorders. In humans, CBD is being studied as a potential treatment for pain, anxiety, and schizophrenia symptoms.

CBD Is Completely Harmless of All Ages

CBD is a relatively safe product for dogs, with very few adverse effects.

Even if it occurs, the adverse effects of CBD are minimal, such as moderate sleepiness or diarrhea.

CBD supplements are harmless and even suitable for youngsters, and they are safe and perhaps beneficial for pups as well.

CBD stimulates the endocannabinoid system, which provides numerous benefits.

When CBD Shouldn’t Be Given to Your Puppy:

Now, only because CBD can be helpful with these issues doesn’t imply you should take it to your dog right away if you see a behavioral problem or another symptom.

Before starting your dog on CBD, I always recommend consulting with your veterinarian.

I also only prescribe CBD for significant diseases and symptoms that cannot be cured by exercise, a change in lifestyle, or a new diet.

If your dog is acting aggressively toward other dogs or animals, I would first consult with your veterinarian.

Most pups outgrow harmful habits (such as biting and chewing). Try taking the opportunity to educate them not to do so.

Anxiety is the same way:

When pups are left alone, it’s not uncommon for them to act out, but with early diagnosis and the correct kind of training, this type of behavior can frequently be unlearned.

If your dog has gastrointestinal or hunger concerns, I recommend consulting with your veterinarian about lifestyle and nutritional modifications before attempting CBD.

You might be astonished by what I’m about to say.

After all, you may like CBD as a supplement as well as a treatment.

However, I do not believe it is a one-size-fits-all solution for all pet parents.

Instead, as with any other medication or treatment, you should carefully examine your pet’s condition and needs, as well as speak with your veterinarian before starting your dog on CBD.

When Should You Give CBD To Your Dog?

In general, I recommend using CBD to treat persistent symptoms and diseases that cannot be managed with a behavioral or lifestyle modification.

If, for example, your dog’s separation anxiety persists and your vet recommends that you put them on a prescription anxiolytic, that’s when I’d start looking at CBD.

Aggression, for example, is a behavioral issue.

If these issues persist and aren’t resolved with the appropriate training or cognitive behavioral therapy, it may be time to consider CBD.

The same is true for pain, inflammation, as well as other diseases that your veterinarian may recommend long-term treatment with prescription medications.

CBD can be a terrific alternative to pharmaceutical medications because it seldom causes adverse effects and is entirely natural and harmless. This is especially true if your dog is suffering from a chronic ailment.

Is Cannabidiol (CBD) Oil Safer for Puppies?

CBD oil is very safe for pups. The World Health Organization reported, based on preliminary investigations, that “there is no misuse or dependency potential for pets using CBD.” CBD is also described as “usually well-tolerated, with a decent safety profile,” according to the paper. It further says that Cannabidiol products can help with “various medical ailments ranging from anxiety to nausea.”

Simply said, there is no age restriction for CBD supplements, and cannabinoids are equally safe and beneficial to newborn pups as they are to adults and elderly dogs. The right dose of full-spectrum Cannabis oil combined with appropriate use results in various health advantages and better overall health.

You must utilize CBD Oil products to benefit from the medicinal benefits of CBD. Hemp, not marijuana, is used to make CBD pet goods like oils and dog treats. This is due to the presence of THC (the psychoactive element that causes individuals to feel “high”). THC toxicity occurs in dogs when they consume too much THC.

On the other hand, Hemp has a low THC content (less than 0.3%) and is high in cannabinoids (CBDs) with medical qualities. For maximum purity and medical benefits, cannabinoids are extracted from cannabis to use the CO2 extraction process. This is an excellent reason to the table, and make sure you’re using a product designed specifically for pets.

What Are the Effects of CBD on a Puppy?

CBD seems to have the same impact on pups as it does on adults when it comes to pain, inflammation, as well as stress management. It also benefits puppies who have chronic illnesses or medical issues. Yet, as the United Kennel Club points out, official investigations on the effects of CBD are lacking in the veterinary scientific community. This is something that various sources agree on.

Mark Verdino, MD, Northside Animal League America’s executive vice president as well as chief of veterinary staff, asks if CBD products “really assist with discomfort, or make them not care?” We don’t know, but when they take the medicine, they appear to be less receptive to low-level pain stimuli, such as arthritis and other similar conditions.”

Art, Music, and Humour: How Ukraine is Maintaining Public Morale Amid Conflict with Russia

Published

on

how-ukraine-is-maintaining-public-morale-amid-conflict-with-russia

More than 13 million Ukrainians have fled their homes, including around five million who have gone to neighbouring countries and millions of others displaced within the country itself. Yet the flames of optimism and unity continue to burn bright among Ukrainian homes and abroad, sparked by art, music, and humour. Here’s how they do it.

Paint Brush Mightier than the Sword

Gamlet Zinkivskiy, a Ukrainian artist, has made headlines after the media took notice of his use of art in fighting back against Russian forces. He creates murals to boost morale in Ukraine’s battle-scarred Kharkiv and help thwart Russian forces.

Although he earns a living through his studio art and wishes to further develop his career in England, Zinkivskiy decided to hang back and participate in the fight by using what he has mastered the most — the paintbrush.

His recruiter, Kizhemyako, is a prominent Ukrainian businessman who founded a volunteer militia against Russia. He also supports other artists, such as celebrated poet and novelist Serhiy Zhadan.

Zinkivskiy’s latest work is a mural titled Hospitality from Hell. It is a 3-metre high painting depicting a gasoline can and petrol bombs, much like what Ukrainian Civilians used to fight back against Russia’s onslaughts against Kyiv and Kharkiv earlier in the year.

The title “Hospitality from Hell” was intentionally picked as a mockery of Russian soldiers that expected to be welcomed in Kharkiv and Kyiv but were met with Molotov cocktails instead.

Other works from Zinkivskiy include I Keep Balance, a painting on two large double doors featuring a man balanced on the edge of a white block, one hand holding body armour with a tourniquet attached, and the other arm supporting two birds.

Zinkivskiy’s work only became widely known recently, while other prominent artists across Europe were already making statements as soon as the war started.

For example, street artist Seth had his fresco, titled Onwards Ukraine, on Rue Biot in France just three days into the conflict. It depicted a young girl with a crown of flowers and ribbons, waving the Ukrainian flag and crushing Russian tanks under her shoes. Prints of the work would later sell out at $55 apiece.

Other artists who have shown support for Ukraine include Italian Tvboy, Andrea Villa, Harry Greb, as well as Big Ben from France, Stanislav Belovski from Bulgaria, and Polish Tuse.

Attention-Grabbing Eurovision Win

Ukraine’s recent success in the Eurovision came highly celebrated by citizens worldwide as it tipped the scales in the country’s favour. To Ukrainians, constantly reminding the world of their existence, music, and culture is vital. It shows that Ukraine matters.

The song that Ukraine’s flag bearer Kalush chose for the finals, Stefania, was a rallying cry cleverly disguised as a tribute to lead singer Oleh Psiuk’s mother.

For instance, Psiuk shouted at the end of the performance, calling for the world to help Ukraine. He also mentioned Mariupol and Azovstal steelworks. Many online users praised this bold way of attracting attention. At the same time, Zelenskyy congratulated Kalush Orchestra and pointed out that such courage from Ukraine impressed the world. A video would later surface, showing one of the soldiers deployed outside Azovstal steelworks singing the Stefania song.

Remaining amusingly human and showing the world that Ukraine matters while subtly resisting Russian forces has worked well for the country. We have seen almost 1,000 companies pull out of Russia to support Ukraine, including popular names such as Amazon, Apple, Starbucks, BMW, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi. Even some of the top online casinos and betting sites like bet365 have boycotted the country.

Dark Humour

There is no better adjective for Ukrainian humour than dark. Ukrainians love their jokes so much that they named April Fool’s Day Humorina, the city’s holiday of humour. In Odessa, it is a day of showing kindness and witty humour.

In the same spirit, Ukrainians have managed to use humour as part of their resistance against Russia. Even in the middle of an invasion, the internet is populated with images of Ukrainian civilians and farmers playing with abandoned Russian artillery.

For example, in one video titled “Ukrainian Tractors Versus Russian Armour,” farmers can be seen using a tractor to tow an abandoned Russian tank across the fields.

If that does not sound funny, wait till you hear these next examples. The country’s Twitter account posted a meme illustrating different types of headaches. There was a head with a red patch at the front for migraines, another had it at the back for hypertension, and for the highlight, one that was entirely red for living next to Russia.

In yet another meme, “Hawkeye” from The Avengers is seen asking a Ukrainian soldier: “Are you one of the Avengers?” The response goes: “No, I am from the Ukraine post,” coming from Serhiy Chizhikov, a postal worker who joined Ukrainian forces after the invasion and amazed the world when he shot down a Russian Su-35 plane.

Furthermore, a meme depicting a Ukrainian soldier flipping off Russia’s Moskva warship was turned into a postage stamp and sold out in days, then started reselling at $100 a piece.

Humour is a big part of Ukrainians’ survival strategies and an important aspect of their national characteristic. Even president Zelenskyy was big on jokes back when he headed Kvartal 95 Studio (which he helped found). The group ridiculed Putin and high-ranking Russian politicians for years. For instance, they once described Putin as a baby who could control his gas. They also ridiculed Prime Minister Medvedev, claiming he supported Facebook’s presence in Russia because the platform was the only place he could get friendships.

Humour is working out well for Ukraine and seems to be a crucial part of preserving the country’s individuality and independence in the face of Russia’s invasion. In any case, humour triggers positive mental and physical changes that offer stress relief. In the meantime, we hope for peace and things to go back to normal as soon as possible.
